Delighted with the results of my eye surgery

Leaving this review I’m thinking that it should cover the operation itself as well as the experience with Wilmslow Hospital and Mr Quah. For those not inclined to read the whole review – it was a 5-star experience throughout. I am in my late fifties and had been very short-sighted since childhood. When my eyesight worsened again – including showing the first signs of cataracts - I discussed options with my optician. He immediately suggested RLE (refractive lens exchange) surgery. This would fix the cataracts (permanently) whilst also correcting my sight. This surgery removes the old natural lens entirely and replaces it with a new artificial lens designed to offer corrected sight. So a very tempting proposition but also a pretty scary one. Although for me the prospect of never needing cataract surgery in the future whilst being at least mainly glasses free meant that I had to pursue it. My optician (thank you Graham at James Doyle in Wilmslow) referred me to Mr Quah. My first appointment was a very smooth experience. The Hospital is a brand-new facility, squeaky clean, friendly staff, all very reassuring. After a very thorough sight and eye examination, I met Mr Quah for the first time. Mr Quah is everything you would wish your prospective eye-surgeon to be; calm, professional, thorough with a very calming bedside manner. Even when explaining the various risks and downsides (which of course they are required to do) he managed to put me at ease ! He recommended Zeiss AT LISA tri-focal lenses. Yes – tri-focal ! I use the full brand name as Mr Quah recommended that I search the lens to check its properties. If and when you do this there are various videos of the procedure being performed – although you might want to think carefully before watching one of these! Basically it’s a state of the art lens and is intended to optimise near, middle and far distance sight. The next time I met Mr Quah was 2 weeks later for the procedure on the left (non dominant eye). After being prepped I entered a large and very impressive theatre. The most challenging part for the patient is lying down on the operating table! Mr Quah again put me at ease – talking to me as he administered the local anaesthetic, and applied a surgical covering. I then stared up into a very bright light whilst he stood beside me and explained each step until literally just a few minutes later, he was done. A colleague described the procedure as more invasive psychologically than physically and this is absolutely correct. What is happening (if you didn’t watch the video!) is that 2 tiny incisions are made in the side of the lens – the old lens is broken down with ultrasound and a new lens is inserted (using a syringe) which unrolls itself as it is inserted. The procedure on the RH eye was just as straight forward and afterward my distance vision was great. Your vision does take a few days to settle and mine is still improving. Distance and middle is great with near vision good. I am now functionally glasses free – as are apparently 85 – 90 % of patients and couldn’t be happier. A week after surgery I had a 50-mile journey. The drive out was great with my sight better than with glasses. Returning after dark I experienced some slight halos around oncoming headlights but this is easy enough to ignore. The only downside is that super-close vision is worse than previously – but I can always use a reading glass to sort this. In practice I can read my phone screen easily, then look up to the end of the garden without even the tiniest pause to re-focus. In summary - having needed glasses (or contacts) since childhood I now have excellent vision without them. It’s life-changing. With the full benefit of 20/20 hindsight (!) and having my time over - I would absolutely have this surgery again - I would absolutely use the Wilmslow Hospital - I would insist on Mr Quah Thank you to Mr Quah and the whole team

An awesome Centre

Dr Sid Goel made this journey of my lens replacement surgery as smooth, flawless and reassuring as possible. His obvious expertise immediately puts your mind at ease and lays your fears to rest. The surgery and recovery has been amazing. I couldn't have asked for a better Clinic and Doctor. My vision has gone from a -6 prescription to 20/20!!

A lump near my eye…

A year ago I found a lump near my eye which changed daily as to appearance and feeling. My GP could not identify what it was. After seeing other doctors and unfortunately due to covid waiting many months I went to see Mr Goel who was caring and considerate, unhurried and able to explain the most likely explanation for the lump. He explained clearly what procedure would be best and answered my questions. The surgery was professional and exceptional. I was given personal attention and reassurance. It is very difficult to see any sign of where the lump was. I am still awaiting the biopsy results however do not feel overly worried due to Mr Goel's support.

Lens implant - best decision I’ve made!!

After being told I could no longer wear contact lenses after the damage caused to my eyes following an infection, Mr Goel informed me of a lens implant. I was extremely anxious about it but Mr Goel was so informative about the procedure and answered my many questions! He and his team put me at total ease throughout the whole process. All the staff involved at Spire hospital were fantastic from start to finish. It was a very quick procedure and once both eyes had been finished it was amazing to wake up and see!! I hadn’t experienced that in years. Mr Goel continues to support me now during the recovery stage and my eyes and sight feel great. Best decision I made and wish I’d done it years ago! The freedom and ease of not having glasses or lenses is just amazing and worth every part of the process. Would highly recommend!!

Mr Quah is excellent

Mr Quah is excellent. He operated on my eyes (replacement lenses), 5 years ago and having just seen him again to gain his expert opinion he was just as nice and so knowledgeable. I would recommend him to anyone about to undergo eye surgery for whatever reason.
