Great colors, bad paint smell

I painted 2 walls of our bedroom with a dark green shade (Ditch the tie): great coverage and color result. BUT, a very strong chemical smell, we couldn’t sleep in the bedroom for at least 2 weeks. And 2,5 months later, the room still smells of paint. Despite keeping windows open etc. Asked customer support and answer was pretty dismissive: “odour is a personal thing”. Well, multiple people confirmed the strong smell, so it’s not just me and my partner having a special nose. All in all, while I love their color choices, the smell is too strong and I won’t buy again from them. I don’t understand their claim of low VOC, but that sure was not the case with the paint I received. Too bad, I was so hooked with their marketing and color choices.

I ordered a sample expecting the traditional liquid type sample, I got a printed piece of paper for £2.50. Not the same thing, crazy charging £2.50. You can not tell the quality of the product.

Not worth the hassle

Not worth the hassle, I really would not deviate from the known paint companies such as F&B and Little Greene. I saw this company on instagram, was keen to try something new but on receiving the paints I changed my mind. It was very tricky to get hold of someone to return the paint and then once I did, I received a very strange email saying the paint had been damaged and I was not entitled to a refund - the email contained no name sign off or evidence of the damage. I have obviously had to hand it over to my credit card provider to dispute but I just think why bother when there are plenty of reputable paint companies out there.

All style and no substance

I bought this paint having seen a lot of hype about it online, and I really liked the look of the colours. However, within a short while of two very experienced decorators using the paint, they both agreed the quality is terrible. I bought 2.5l of eggshell for the woodwork, and we couldn't get it to stay on the surface. We tried everything in terms of prepping the surface - sanding back, oil based primer, water based primer, and yet once dry you could literally rub the paint off the windowsills. In fairness to Coat, they settled the matter quickly and refunded the money, but having now read the reviews, I don't hold out much hope for the rest of the room in terms of durability. If you really like the brand, I'd suggest using the paint in an area that doesn't have a lot of traffic. Unfortunately I've used this paint in one of my main rooms, and suspect it won't be long at all until it shows signs of wear. The brand seems to have been spent a lot of time and money on hiring influencers and making shiny social media campaigns, instead of making paint that actually sticks to surfaces.

Daylight robbery! NOT worth the money and NOT suitable for a family home!

I wouldn’t trust any reviews that were written straight after application! I am a regular decorator of my home and have been for over two decades. I’ve used a variety of products but COAT intrigued me with their great marketing of their beautiful colour range. Intrigued? Maybe I should say “duped”. I was really impressed by the colour and the coverage initially! I followed the application instructions on the tin to a tee and had the help of an interior designer friend to decorate too - and I was happy with the finished result. However, the durability is POOR. Within 2 weeks the high traffic areas of my living room were scuffed and scratched and it looks appalling. I emailed customer support to let them know that this paint is not at all appropriate for use in a family home and that I expected the paint would have cured by now, and I received a cold and patronising response. Apparently the curing process is 28 days. I spent £89 on this tin of paint and I feel totally conned and unsatisfied. Nowhere clear and obvious does it state that the curing process is 28 days. They say durability tests are performed “as per ISO standards” but your standard consumer shouldn’t be expected to know that the ISO standard curing process takes a month. This should be clearer in their information about their product. They just say their product is durable, wipeable, “Scrub Class 1 finish” (which I actually Googled at the time of purchase), it even says the drying time is 2-4 hours, but NOWHERE does it mention curing and it certainly does not transparently say that only after 28 days can you expect that level of durability and that you must tiptoe around your freshly painted walls. Before this happened I had already spent £49 on some paint for my hallway that I am yet to finish applying. I’m not going to bother now - I can’t be expected to stop my children from using our hallway for taking off school bags and shoes for a month in case they scuff the walls! How ridiculous! In 20+ years of painting my family home I have never spent more than £25 on a tin of paint and I have NEVER had scuffing and scratching. NOT of satisfactory quality. NOT fit for purpose. NOT suitable for a family home. Only buy this product if you use your home as a show space and not to actually live in.

Pigment and mixing issues. Poor quality.

In general, the paint arrives poorly mixed with un distributed pigment when you first open it. I would have been willing to overlook this had I not received a second can of the same paint that had been mixed absolutely incorrectly and put it on my wall where it dried splotchy and darker than the correct paint. I had to threaten a chargeback on my card before I was refunded and they sent me extra paint that I explicitly told them I didn’t want and now I need to dispose of properly somehow. In my other rooms, I’ve had a dark gray up now for two weeks and it is not up to standard. It chips off at the slightest contact of furniture and when trying to clean it even using a clean rag, pigment rubs off into the rag.

Great colours, terrible paint!

I was really excited about these paints, beautiful colours and B Corp Certified! I used the Coat Paints calculator to work out how much paint I needed for one wall, the promoted reviews said it was pigmented so needed less. Coat paints are pigmented… and thick! But this does not mean you need less, it means you get a very patchy finish and end up needing more. After the tin was finished it was clear I needed another coat to even up the colour so I purchased another tin. When I started using the new tin, it was a shade lighter! The website says to mix tins of you are using more than one, but in this case how could I have known as they vastly under predicted what I needed. 5 coats later and the wall is still patchy in areas, but what am I going to do, buy more paint? The colours are lovely but the paint is very expensive and hard to work with, my advice save yourself time and money get the same colour mixed with trade paint!
