Lumberjack 9 inch Bench Top Bandsaw

My good lady refers to me affectionally as ‘Le Bodger Superieur’, which is her way of paying me a compliment. She even bought me the T-shirt. And that just about says it all; I am adequately competent to do repairs, modification and ‘round-the house’ jobs but beyond that I know my limitations. So, when I was looking for something that would help me cut wood in the manner and at the task-level I was seeking, the Lumberjack Professional 9" Bench Top Bandsaw was amongst a gaggle of those that caught my eye. I did my research and came across quite a packed field of play across a wide range of prices and soon learnt that it not so much a case of ‘you get what you pay for’ but more ‘you don’t get what you don’t pay for’. The Lumberjack is towards the top end. In short, and whilst intending no side-swipe against the competition, the cheaper models inevitably fell off my radar due to either lack of features or, more importantly, quality of construction. Thus I opted for the Lumberjack and I’m mighty pleased I did. An endearing, and I accept purely personal, aspect of the brand is the firm’s location in Wolverhampton. Hailing from across the cultural divide in adjacent Dudley I am fluent in ‘Yam-Yam’, the native brogue. For those not familiar with the patois, I gather it is now available as a post-grad option at Oxford. Or maybe not. Anyway, let me not digress … instead of going through Anon-a-zon or whatever, I contacted the sales department of Lumberjack direct where I became acquainted with the delightful Sharna. She was to accompany me on my journey from purchase right through to after-sales and one could only wish that every company has a Sharna on board. Quite superb communications. Now, as a writer & broadcaster by trade and with donkey’s years behind me in the PR game, I do at least feel singularly competent to comment on that essential element and I could not fault it. But, to the contrivance itself. Well, it arrived neatly boxed within hours and less than half an hour after that it was up and running in my workshop – it really was that simple. It’s a bit on the heavy side, which is no bad thing and harks back to the bit I mentioned about quality of construction, so those not quite so fleet of limb may value some assistance with the task. But, once up, it’s up. And it looks really neat, with well-finished alloy parts contrasting with the easily-secured red doors hiding the gubbins. A solid-enough table and equally substantial quick-release fence add to the feel. The throat takes up to about 9 inches wide, which is way enough for me. Once up and plugged in, there’s the matter of operating it. Adequate but simple instructions show how to adjust band tension, roller tracking and so forth but – and here’s what I found delightful – mine needed none of it. All spot on and ready to go, within a matter of minutes from set-up I was in my safety gear practising slicing wood. If you are seeking technical information I regret you have the wrong geezer but I’ll gladly recount the practicalities of my own efforts. My first job was preparing a series of laminate slices (about 1.5 mm or so) from a piece of 3”x3” hardwood, which it accomplished with ease. My initial experimentation has since extended to all manner of ‘bodging superieur’ that would have otherwise taken ages, and to a considerably lower standard, with a handsaw. Take it nice and steady and you are rewarded with a crisp clean cut that requires little sanding. Quite honestly, if I need to cut wood any bigger or smoother than this can cope with then I will go to a ‘chippie’; otherwise it is absolutely fine for my purposes. Plus it looks the part on my bench. I am entirely independent and no-one pays me for this stuff (I wish!) so if I appear to be impressed then it’s because I am genuinely impressed. And all at a price that elevates the Lumberjack from the aforementioned competitors but which should not detract from the quid pro quo of decent quality. In summary it is diminutive but packs a punch in a neat-looking piece of easily-assimilated kit and if that is your bag then it’s just the job. If you need something more powerful, just look on the Lumberjack website and go up a notch or two; there’s a range to choose from.

Terrible service

I have received a request for a review and I haven't even received my package yet. So I'd rather give zero stars. Eight days after ordering and apparently my package is still with Evri. Not at all impressed.

great build but construction instructions are worthless.

nice build quality and excellent packaging Sadly this great machine and others by Lumberjack need serious time spent on their construction instructions. They seem to have been written by someone who has never seen the machine. Lumberjack, PLEASE address this issue immediately, as it will turn customers against your products.

Bargain budget alternative to Dremmel…

Bargain budget alternative to Dremmel with flexible shaft and comprehensive starter kit. Answered pre-purchase questions. Cheaper than re-sellers - no P&P. Quite noisy but in fairness I have no idea how loud another mini drill is in comparison.
