"Trust us, we are experienced..."
The staff were kind and helpful enough but they wanted to charge almost twice as much as other providers, for the exact same device, arguing that this extra cost would cover an 80-pound worth(!!) of “earwax removal” (Bupa does it for 55, for example, and even that is not value for money compared to other options in the market). They also said it would cover “aftercare” and other mysterious services that, frankly, I'm not sure how much I would need and whether I would want to explore the possibility of getting those services from other, less expensive providers. But you cannot purchase the hearing aid without being overcharged for the "after-care", the package locks you into a committed relationship with a very expensive provider. The information I was given was vague and at times strained credulity. For example, I was told that it would take two weeks(!) to order a hearing device because it is a lengthy process to adjust the device to my specific hearing needs. Other providers told me that all devices of a certain make are initially identical, and the tuning is not a lengthy process. When I expressed the apparent inconsistencies, my consultant did not provide me with evidence or facts. Instead, I was told to trust Harley street's “expertise” and decades of “experience”. I found this appeal to authority not entirely convincing. After the session, I decided to do some research and easily found another provider that offered me the same device within days, and same service (aftercare etc) for nearly half the price. My advice to other customers; don’t commit to Harley Street Hearing before you do your research with other providers. My suggestion to Harley Street Hearing - if you make a claim, consider providing hard facts and figures to support what you say, rather than using the line: "trust us, we are experienced..."
