Excellent Service from Start to Finish
Booked online prior to arriving in Mauritius and paid in advance using PayPal. On the start day of the reservation, the car was dropped at the hotel on time and was in excellent condition. The guy ran through the features and explained how to use them then took down a copy of the my card details using the scratch technique. We had no problems with the car over the entire rental period. On the end date of the rental, a different guy arrived at the hotel (20 mins late) to pick up the car. He checked over the car and once satisfied that the car was in the same standard as when we received the car, he handed me the section of the contract where my card details ha been copied down.

Gps no show
The car/agent was late to arrive. They were due 9am and the first representative turned up at 9.05-9.10, but we had to wait until 9.25 before the 2nd person arrived with the documentation. There was no Gps and they said they would drop off at our hotel at 20.00 later the first day but they never did. We had the car two days but no gps which was a part of the package.

Wonderful!
The car was almost new (2,000 KM) the representative of the company waited for us in the airport and explained all necessary about the car and driving in Mauritius. He also gave us the GPS, but we didn't use it, preferred Google Maps on our phone with local SIM.

poor service, poor quality cars
I hired a car through Maki Car Rental and was extremely disappointed. Here's a few of the promises from their website: - "Many providers offer either poor or overpriced cars" - "Free GPS device"; "further information for Mauritius: A satellite navigation system is included with all rentals"; "All customers that rent a car from us for five days or more will get a free satellite navigation device. Sadly, Mauritius is not financially relevant for the major car nav companies like Garmin and Tom Tom. Thus, their maps are chronically outdated and contain lots of errors. We used to get frequent complaints from customers that were led far off track into a sugar cane field or had to drive a huge detour because of the bad maps. So we decided to maintain our own version of the map that we can update independently and much faster than any other car rental company in Mauritius. As a bonus, we also included a list of well-known and little-known public beaches in Mauritius and our GPS device will also warn you of known speed traps and accident-prone points." Maki are simply brokers and arrange the car hire with another company - in my case - First Car Rental. The car didn't have a panel without a dent or a scratch, hadn't been cleaned inside, pulled considerably to the left whilst driving and had engine warning lights (ABS and airbag) and was missing the Satnav. I was told that Maki knew that no satnav was available and that there wasn't a fault with the car but only an issue needing reset. Given the limited options and having spent so long travelling I had no choice but to proceed and was told no other cars were available. To Maki's credit - they did contact First and in the end the car was replaced - it was in a similar state with considerable damage but at least had an engine that wasn't faulty and not unroadworthy. However, they are aware that there are insufficient GPS units available and their initial offer of a remedy was for me to buy a prepaid sim card, they then offered a partial refund (although at the time of writing no refund has been received). Unfortunately unless Maki choose to distance themselves from operators who rent out dodgy cars, this reflects on them directly. Similarly, if they promise GPS devices, and provide a considerable amount of sales patter about them as seen above, they ought to follow through or at least warn people in advance.

Very old worn-out car!
Booked with Maki for a two week hire in Mahe, Seychelles who then sub-contracted to Eden Cars. Had no problem with this until we saw the car upon collection at the airport. The car was full of exterior scratches and small dents and had almost 100,000 km on the clock. Inside seats were well worn and driver's seat was actually torn! Overall, the car looked shabby and tired. Not what you would expect from a hired car! The car was clearly pretty ancient! We were worried that the car might break down somewhere on Mahe's treacherous roads, but fortunately we were lucky and the car performed well for the fortnight. I think Maki needs to inform Eden Cars to provide newer cars to their customers, as we would NOT reserve another car unless we had a guarantee that the car was newer.
