3 fab weeks of volunteering
I’ve just finished my 3 weeks of volunteering in Sri Lanka. I had an amazing time and met so many new friends who made the trip for me! A special shout-out to Camila and Anoma, Camila is the best coordinator and friend, she made me feel heard and very comfortable during my time here. Travelteer are lucky to have her. Anoma is very inspiring with all of his knowledge and passion for what he does in the wildlife and environmental sector, he was great to work with and a true mentor. Some negatives; I think it could have been made clearer that if you want aircon you will be charged 5000 rupees per person per week, which adds up a lot and considering most of us are students with no income I feel this is quite steep. The houses are very basic, the lakehouse had no wifi the whole time I was there, there are not enough mugs and plates etc for everyone to use so I had to buy my own bowl for my cereal in the mornings. The curfew to be in the house during the week is 10:30pm, which is understandable as it’s for our safety, however it was a bit of a shock when we found this out the day we got there. I think this should be iterated more beforehand. There are extra charges for group activities such as 2000 per person for the pool party and sometimes 300 rupees towards the bus which is just up the road. I do feel this should be mentioned as myself and many other people did not come out with enough money due to this not being stated. Despite some negatives, there are many amazing opportunities to be had here and overall, the people and staff make this trip an incredible one.

Mental Health volunteering in Sri Lanka
I went to Sri Lanka this summer and spent 5 week’s volunteering on the mental health project. Before coming, I was very nervous and really didn’t know what to expect or how I would find it. Fortunately, I have had the most amazing time and absolutely loved the project and the volunteering I’ve completed. The mental health programme has a range of different placements that all are individually interesting, interactive and really useful for my degree (psychiatry nursing.) My favourite part of the programme was visiting the orphanage and getting to spend time with the kids there, I really felt like I made an impact to some of them which was incredibly rewarding. I feel the main reason for the programme being so successful was the way it was run/planned by the coordinator Bernie. Bernie was an amazing coordinator and constantly went above and beyond to make sure everyone was happy with their experience. She also was just incredibly inspiring to watch and look up to, how she interacted with the children and her knowledge on certain topics was genuinely amazing. I also have to mention the sessions that were put on by Nalika. Nalika spent so much of her time teaching us about Ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka and all the different methods used. I found it fascinating to gain an understanding of the different cultures, teachings of medicine, and also very helpful for my degree again. The only small piece of criticism that’s not really even criticism that I would want to mention is the fundraising money. I thought maybe their could be more involvement with the money and maybe a day were say all the volunteers went to the shops with the coordinator and were aloud to get lots of resources for the children at the orphanage using that fundraising money. I just think it would be really nice to see where the money goes, just an idea though:) Overall though, a wonderful experience and I would definitely recommend!!

I was doing the Textials program and…
I was doing the Textials program and really enjoyed it it was so inspiring seeing how the women work as well as learning and teaching new techniques. I was able to have a lot of input on what we were teaching and there was a lot of flexibility in the timetable, The Travle Teer team were so good at helping me find the resources and facilitating my ideas, I worked closely with, Hansi, Gothami, who were both amazing. I especially enjoyed going to the school doing fabric painting. We also introduced tie-dye and created T-shirts from the material with the women from the Hope project, for the boys at the orphanage, connecting all of the communities was so enjoyable and rewarding. I also experienced batik and screen printing sessions which were also a lot of fun. In my first week I went on tour which was amazing to explore Sri Lanka and meet so many new people, doing activities. Camilla was our tour coordinator and she made the experience so special. I would 100% recommend this experience I loved every minute!
