Didn't know that my car had finance outstanding from a previous owner. Turns out they weren't getting the information about cars with VW Finance so anyone with a VW, Audi, Seat or Skoda could be in the same boat as me. This has caused my insurance to be invalid (as I'm not the owner of the car and don't have permission to be the keeper), so if you've used HPI to check one of these cars I'd suggest that you check with a different HPI Checking service to make sure you're not driving around uninsured. Even though HPI Check have confirmed it was their mistake and I've now been without a car for 20+ days their guarantee will only pay out for any financial loss, as they've cleared the finance (they've told me a couple of times that this has been done but when I check with the finance company it has not been cleared and I haven't had any written confirmation since last time I checked) they say that I don't have any financial loss. They have however offered to refund my £19.99, which I have declined. I am now seeking legal advice to see what my next move should be as I have a car on my drive that I don't legally own and would never have owned if they had given me the correct information in the first place. Thanks for 20 days of hell HPI Check, the stress, the endless pointless phone calls, the hassle of trying to get to work and some days having to cycle the 48 mile round trip.

I never buy a used vehicle without carrying out my own HPI check, even when I have been assured that a vehicle is HPI clear, and recommend you do the same. A £20 check is peanuts if it alerts you to problem with a purchase costing, in most cases, thousands of pounds!. Go on, do that check, you know it makes sense.

I can hand on heart say that this vehicle check has saved me a lot of money, stress and potential heartache. I am buying a car for my son who just passed his test a week ago 11/06/17, after viewing many cars, we found what we both thought to be the perfect one, all usual body and mechanical checks had been done by myself and asking the very nice private seller lots of questions, I was just about to hand over the cash when I remembered the HPI check. I did it there and then, to my horror the car had been a TOTAL LOSS by the insurer. Enough said. THANK YOU HPI
