Good car, could have been better in some areas

The car was super easy to use and rent out as US students studying abroad. Everything we needed was in the van, but we wish the cooking stove was detachable so we could move under cooking shelters when in windy locations. We also had trouble with the spare wheel underneath the car coming loose at one point, and the car did not stay very warm during the night.

Crapy campers

Hello The price WE paid for one month was more than the value of the van in the second hand market. The only reason we didn't bring the van back, the first day, is that we had a very tight schedule and were expected to visit a lot of NZ Friends during the month. In and outside, the van was dirty. Both of the side windows were wrecked, nearly impossible to get them down or up.It was raining inside through the side door. The rear door had the same problem and dust was invading the van. But the worst was the bed ,dirty hard, so much used that my friend didn't want to sleep anymore in it after the first night. My bed in the roof was just a rat hole.So we had to rent bedrooms for all our holydays. Why did WE paid for a camper???The left seat was so hard that we used pillows to save our bottoms. Our kiwi Friends called our van The "Crapy camper". The milage was incredible.320000, the van was'nt going straight the steering wheel was loose and we had to handle it very carefully.I give 2 stars to happy campers just because of the guy who was working in the workshop in the Christchurch site and accept to take the van , éventuellement if we were 20 minutes late. I think closing AT 4pm IS nonsense when you're working in tourism.

Great South Island road trip thanks to lucky rentals

We rented a lucky rodeo for 25 days to travel the South Island and Lucky rentals was a great company to work with! The pick up and drop off were easy and everything in our van was great. The lucky rodeo was the perfect car for my friend and I to spend almost a month living out of exploring all the natural wonders NZ has to offer and I would recommend them to anyone!

Mixed experience

We had a mixed experience with Lucky Rentals. The good parts- their customer service was fantastic and very helpful. The car also drove really well for its age, was relatively fuel efficient and did not breakdown once. Unfortunately, those are all the positives we had. We knew the car was going to be old, and so were expecting some issues e.g. things not working as efficiently- but we were not expecting it to be in this bad shape, and also thought it would at the very least be clean. The interior of the car and the bedding pack were dirty. The bedding and car seats were stained, there were dead flies and mould on the ceiling of the car, and the seatbelts were filthy. The exterior of the car was in bad shape- window seals were hanging off, the corner of the rear bumper was damaged and falling away, lots of cracks and chips, and the back doors were unreliable to lock and unlock. The interior was also not great. Along with it being dirty: the blinds to pull down when sleeping were hanging on by a thread, the passenger side door was broken- the window control kept popping out and there was a hole in it with very sharp edges, and the rear view mirror was damaged and so parts were obscured. Other things to note included the bed being very narrow and short, the cool box smelt horribly of damp and made anything we put in there smell too so it was unusable. There is also very little storage space which was a problem when it rained as there was nowhere to put wet coats and clothes. Overall, we would not recommend Lucky Rentals to others. It was fine for us and we knew somewhat what we were getting into with an old vehicle, but did not expect the poor condition it would be in.

The campervan was fine for a 20+…

The campervan was fine for a 20+ year-old vehicle. There were no safety problems with how it worked as a vehicle (e.g., brakes, gears, steering). It did, however, show its age in things breaking down: e.g., the passenger window ceased to operate, the dome light stopped working, and the power outlet stopped working part-way through. While the company did have a call-line to report problems, the solution for ours would have required us to wait around in an unattractive part of Dunedin for 6 hours while a mechanic tried to fix it. We chose to live with the problems.

Best price and set up over all with its downsides

The check in experience was awesome. We were able to choose the add ons we needed and find the right insurance coverage for our needs. It’s nice to be able to do it yourself and then just finish up with a staff member. We also really enjoyed the take some - leave some area and wish every company would do that. The set up of the car is great. You have enough room over head to sit up straight in the van, the backrest is nice to be left in and the kitchen set up is convenient. The bed is comparable very comfortable and the installed blinds are genius. The only down side of all of it was that you get what you pay for. Lucky is the cheapest option we could find but therefore lots of things are just not in the best condition anymore. The chairs were both more or less broken, though they yet worked to sit in. The gas cooker made us more angry than anything as it halfway falls apart. Some of the dishes were dirty when we received the van. There are a lot of stains on the ceiling, either from killed sandflies or I assume it is mold from too much moisture. The car doors have their issues as well. Sometimes they open, sometimes they don’t. They for sure won’t stay open once you’re at a little incline but it’s all manageable. Overall we would rent lucky again. The setup is unbeatable and so is the price. For that we take on the little inconveniences.

First time in New Zealand.

First time in New Zealand. We chose lucky rentals because it was the cheapest option we could find. Everything went smoothly and everyone we encountered with was helpful and very nice. I gave only four stars because the mattress was very uncomfortable. It felt like sleeping on a hard wooden floor. Our hips and back hurt every morning. And I as a rather tall person (1,88m) did not have enough room because the bed was too short. But overall for the price I am not sure if a more comfortable camper can be found.
