5 May 2023: Update I am so disappointed that 1stDibs have sent me virtually the same response as their original message almost a month ago. I took the time to respond to them directly in April and then when I heard nothing, I laid out the situation again in detail here on TrustPilot. They clearly have not read either reply and have again sent the same stock answer. Someone with the authority to make decisions needs to take a look at this. 2 May 2023: Update 3 weeks later and no reply from 1st Dibs directly nor here on TrustPilot. Seems to me 1st Dibs only responds to positive reviews or big spenders. Beware anyone who spends a more modest sum - they will will not look after you or even have the decency to reply. -------------------------------------- Complete Scam. Hidden costs on this website have left me stuck with paying over 30% more than I bid for my item. I bid £500 including shipping, and ended up paying £656. This was my first time using 1st Dibs. Firstly, I placed a bid in pounds sterling. However my offer was submitted by 1st Dibs to the vendor in US dollars, with a dollar exchange rate and I was charged more than I expected for the item. When I questioned this, 1st Dibs said my profile stated I wanted to deal in dollars. When I signed up to 1st Dibs I was never asked to check my profile, nor was I asked for confirmation of offer currency before submitting my offer. I had no idea that my pounds sterling bid would be exchanged into dollars, and then back again to pounds sterling with the result that I would be charged c.4% more by the seller. The second and even more troubling issue was that I was given no indication that I would be subject to customs duties on this item. The seller had stated free shipping. I assumed that meant my item would arrive at no additional cost to me. It is not clearly stated at the time of bidding that shipping does not include customs duties. It does not say in the same place on the checkout page as the free shipping notice, that this does not include customs duties. So my bid was accepted and then I received a notification from DHL that in order to receive my item I needed to pay a further 27% charge on top of what I bid. Total c. 30% added hidden cost to me on top of what I bid for this item. When I asked 1st Dibs about this I was sent an automated answer pointing me to the Ts&Cs of the website which are hidden behind several click throughs. Even then, there is no clarity on what the cost of the customs duty might be on my specific item. I wrote back explaining this was my first time using the website, that it was a genuine mistake and asking them to help me recoup the costs or help me to send the item back without the extra costs. It has been almost a week and I have received NO REPLY from 1st Dibs. I am so upset. I feel I have been scammed. If I had known this item came with additional costs of £156, I would have bid £344 as I was only willing to pay a total of £500. Then it would have been up to the seller to refuse or accept the bid. This scam has taken the decision of how much to pay out of my hands and I feel like I have been made to pay more in a very underhand way.

Dining table not as described. My letter to 1stdibs: I understand you lost this dispute. I have been reimbursed the whole amount. You never took my complaints seriously, you never contacted the seller to ask if what I was communicating to you was true. You denied my request to qualify under the Buyer’s Protection plan you promise on your website. American Express performed an investigation and found that 1stdibs didn’t deliver what was promised. Why would I ever buy anything through 1stdibs ever again, paying premium prices and fees? Why would I do that, when my rights as a customer are completely disregarded? From now on, I will buy directly from sellers.
