Products are not fit for purpose
We bought encaustic Alalpardo white and black tiles for our hallway. My frustration is that I don't believe the products are fit for purpose due to the painstaking preparation required and how difficult they are to install correctly. These encaustic tiles are rustic and filled with imperfections. It comes with the territory and we understood that. Numerous tiles featured cracked edges, cracks and colour imperfections. We sanded down the edges of the tiles to smooth them out and then washed each of them carefully. We then sealed twice using Fila PRW200. They looked alright at this point. However, we found after this point that any bit of dirt, footprint or particulate will be absorbed into the tiles and they are extremely difficult to clean, even after using the recommended PRW200 sealant. This is even before grouting. These tiles have to be grouted using a point grout method of grouting (not slurry/spread method). I'm not convinced you can grout these tiles in any other way than point grouting, regardless of the grout colour you choose. It's my opinion that it should be made very clear that dark grouts cannot be used with these tiles and the slurry or spread method of grouting can also 100% not be used if choosing these tiles. In my opinion this needs to be made much more explicit as part of the installation instructions. We're now going to have to sand back the top layer of dirt in order to get them to a place where they don't look awful. My advice if you're buying these tiles is to please please please think very carefully about how difficult they are to install and whether it's worth it to you. I personally think these tiles are overhyped, overpriced and the products themselves and the recommended sealants are not fit for purpose.
