Take your own picnic
I've recently been to two NT properties. Today was Lytes Cary Manor in Somerset. We started at the cafe where we paid £4.50 for a cardboard sandwich and the coffee was so awful I watered the ground with it. Come on National Trust - this is just not Good enough! For anyone interested my advice would be to take your own picnic!

Want to get through.. hold a seance .
I have changed bank accounts recently and have been trying for three days now to phone as the facility to change it on the website has been suspended.(total hold time 1 hour 30 mins) Been waiting 25 mins so far only to be continually reminded that I can go to the website, which tells you to call. Upshot is that the DD will not be changed, I have written to their enquies to cancel the account instead. One really unhappy ex customer. Did finally get an answer from a very grumpy persons who sounded like she was accusing me of leaving it too late when I had tried to contact from the day they sent the renewal letter. I think also the lesson here is DO NOT allow auto renew for these people as if you need to stop it then you will find it difficult if not possible to contact them.

We love the Trust
Visited Nostell in Yorkshire; everyone we met was helpful and knowledgeable as usual. Four stars only as I was a bit miffed by the 'you can avoid the black figures in the next room notice'. I have big issues about the world wars - lost family in them and they screwed up others' lives - but I don't expect to be warned every time there is some potential 'trigger' about the wars in the next room. We need to help people to deal with emotions, not avoid them or cancel them. We are life members so haven't experienced the admin problems which other posters seem to indicate they have, although some of the comments about the Trust sound like a cut and paste from the Daily Mail comments pages, almost a campaign. The Trust is very good value and needs to stay in business for all of us. And I find the regional magazine and the handbook excellent. Update 18 July 2023: I have written to the Trust FAO senior management urging some action on the points raised in these reviews. It might be worth others doing the same as no-one responds to the reviews which are dreadful PR for the Trust (does anyone senior even read them?). If I were running the Trust I would barely sleep at night worrying about its reputation.

Extortionately expensive & Exclusionary
The national trust has some amazing locations but with their pricing, they prohibit the average family from visiting. £52 (excl. Parking) for a family to visit Stourhead in Wiltshire is pure extortion. Surely, if the aim is to preserve these beautiful locations for current and future generations, the pricing should be more affordable

Sloppy Admin
We have been members for many many years, paying by direct debit with automatic renewal. This year without any communication from NT our membership was cancelled !. Customer service did not seem at all bothered when I called. Also it is so frustrating when waiting on phone for an hour to keep hearing how many questions can be answered by going to website. Pretty obvious they can't!!!

How to put off visitors
Does the NT not know how off-putting their decision to replace cash/card payment for parking to pay by phone only for non-members? Of course we all understand phone payment benefits the car park operators but for an organisation depending on the goodwill of its visitors, can this change be justified? A couple of weeks back The Times carried an article criticising pay by phone and followed it up with a headline 'So you all hate parking apps too ...' after receiving countless supportive replies. Last weekend the Daily Mail carried a similar article relating to Frensham Little Pond, which I was due to visit on Sunday and cancelled when I found out about the payment policy. Although I was told categorically by the NT that pay by phone is the only option, the article helpfully tells people they can pay at the cafe. Too late! Won't be visiting again.

CHARTWELL CAFE
Chartwell Cafe. Having been members of the NT for 30+ years, Chartwell has been a favourite venue: Close to home, good walks, nice gardens, and of course Churchill's home. We have witnessed the gradual decline in the value offered by the cafe. Recently they switched their soup bowl from a generous size to one akin to a coffee cup whilst increasing the price. Their stock control leaves a lot to be desired also. Example: Their excellent Cornish Pasties, a favourite of mine, are seldom available after 12 noon because, they say, "sorry- sold out". So why not increase the order? Replenish the display when needed, at least until the end of the lunchtime period. Not good for business and certainly a customer relationship issue easily remedied. On my more recent visit they had stopped selling their pasties and sausage rolls "because we have a chef in the kitchen". The so-called "chef" was offering jacket potatoes with baked beans or tuna, and an unappealing couple of main courses. They need to get their act together or else give up their attempt to call it a restaurant. How about inviting Costa or Cafe Nero to run it asa franchise?
