Bad, worse, the worst
Bad, time wasting, not working booking system. Unknown "safety rules" applied for outdoor visitors. Close to impossible to book any visit. Policing visitors on entry. All the above "brilliant" experience for my own money. I requested full refund as I get nothing for the money. Constant fight for ANY entrance, then matching all other plans to be there on time - is that worth it ? Definitely not. Update 02/04/2021: I have requested refund of my membership as National Trust made it highly difficult or impossible to get to properties. Response I received: "Due to charity tax rules surrounding Gift Aid, we're unable to refund membership fees." How convenient?! Best business in the world! After you paid them they can do whatever! There is a catch though I never allowed so cold Gift Aid - that fact obviously does not matter as they got the money so they can do whatever with no consequences. I thought twice already about ANY future membership with National trust.
Shambolic booking system
I have been a NT member for 20 years and have been horrified that this year it has been impossible to book a slot to visit local properties. When I spoke to the NT they told me that the slots open at midnight for booking, which is totally unreasonable. I agree with the other gentleman that I think people are booking in advance and then not turning up. To add insult to injury they are suggesting a slightly reduced fee for next year. Last week I walked through Polesden Lacey as part of a long Free walks trek and found that it was almost empty, despite the bookings saying that it was full. I suggest that they look at the numbers that they are allowing in and perhaps think about members having a priority slot or having to input their membership number to make the booking system more equitable...finally is midnight really a good time to release tickets for anyone!!
Not subscribing to a political organisation
Just a short note. I have cancelled my standing order for the National Trust (held for many years). Joint membership 25xxxxxx8 which expires on June 30, 2021 I am furious that your organisation decided to become a political organisation. I don't need a lecture on the history of the Britain. I thought you were about looking after nature, beauty and history - you benefited from the rich land-owners (who created value by farming this country and lending their capital to create wealth) giving away their properties and Beatrice Potter (who created value with children's books) helping out. But now you have taken to the subjective business of judging those properties in the light of 2021 morays - you have cast a shadow on the properties you look after. Finally, I can't support such unpleasantness being heaped on Winston Churchill's reputation and the property that he lived in - only my opinion. I am sure you can do that without my money! I hope all goes well for yourselves, but I will be annoyed if the public purse is also denuded when you find it is impossible to keep going.
Booking system nightmare!
I’m not going to get into politics as we all know that current NT management are painfully Woke and completely out of touch with the older generation. My frustration is the tortuous process of actually managing to book a slot at one of our local sites. It’s an absolute nightmare! Surely NT must be able to introduce some sort of ticket rationing system where members get priority over other for a few slots per month. I’m convinced that some savvy people are block booking the second slots become available and then pick and choose whether they turn up or not. The whole thing is a complete pigs ear and I’m seriously considering cancelling my membership after many years!
Untrustworthy.
After over twenty years joint membership of the NT we have decided to cancel our direct debit to the Trust over their woke, politically correct, and unnecessary decision to effectively name and shame previous owners of properties, now in their care, with respect to their connection to the slave trade, which was banned and enforced by this country over two hundred years ago. We assume the minority groups they seek to appease will support them in the future.
Like many others we have cancelled our funding.
Like many others we have cancelled our long-standing membership in disgust. Membership is quite expensive and whist we did not visit NT sites often we were keen to support our national heritage which, on the whole, we are proud of. We are certainly not prepared to give money to an organisation now intent on destroying our heritage. That is what will happen with this significant reduction in funding and that is a tragedy! Thousands of volunteers have also withdrawn their support. The present management do not seem to grasp the principle that if you put ANYTHING under intense investigation you will probably discover something which is less than perfect. So to quote a previous reviewer: NT, you need to wake-up not woke-up!
Cancelled holiday booking
After enjoying numerous holidays in NT properties we had a booking that had to be moved from 2019 to 2023 due to Covid. The new price quoted was over double the original paid. After a complaint the NT moved the booking and honoured the original price, the NT did the right thing and this has restored some faith that they actually listen.
Have just received an email from…
Have just received an email from National.Trust to.ask.if I would like to renew my son's gift membership. I bought this for him last year to help him get out in the fresh air whilst at uni in Exeter for mental health reasons. Needless to say, he has been unable to use his membership because of lockdown and the fact that you are not supposed to travel far anyway! I have spoken to them this morning and asked why I would renew it when he has not been able to access any of their sites last year and why membership from.last year cannot be carried forward to this year? They have claimed they were only closed for 3 months!! How can that possibly be the case? I have asked for this to be escalated as a complaint and the young lady has told me they will give me the same answer has she herself has just given me. I have asked for a callback which I am supposed to receive by tomorrow (next day). It's just not acceptable to be asked to pay again for something he could not use last year. I didn't ask them for reimbursement then because I would have thought they would have given free membership this year to make up for it. I own a preschool and when.we were closed I did not ask for paying parents for any money as we were not providing a service. How can you charge people when you have not supplied them with anything?
Cancelled membership after several…
Cancelled our membership after several years as members. First NT open all NT sites for free to literally anyone causing NT sites to be swamped by thousands of non paying visitors at the beginning of the first lockdown. Us sensible members were forced to stay away and watch in horror at footage on the news of absolutely swamped NT places. Then NT closed everywhere as they got too many visitors and couldn’t cope, totally their own fault, what a joke. A total disappointment and let down for the actual members. Then NT reopened and created a booking system that does not give any priority to members who they’ve already taken money from, leaving existing members unable to use their memberships while NT fill their pockets with money from non members, talk about greed. And now....well, they are rubbishing our heritage. If NT management are so concerned with how these sites came about why don’t they go and get a different job? Why did they start working there in the first place, you know before they decided to ‘educate’ the rest of us? Perhaps we should just pull these places down and stop looking at them, it beats being made to feel like crap on a family day out. Come to think of it, perhaps we should tear down all the wonderful Norman castles and churches since the Normans invaded us and took our land, how about ‘educating’ church goers on their way in on Sundays? Perhaps hand out reminder leaflets at Viking Festivals That the Danes stole our land and forced many of us into slavery just in case anyone’s having too much fun or better still, cancel them altogether. Perhaps we should drum up enough hatred to start ripping down and defacing monuments. Put up signs at the Roman steps perhaps to stop anyone getting any ideas that the Romans had anything to offer since they also invaded us and stole our lands. Most of us intelligent Brits have moved on thankfully, learning from history, appreciating where we are today and finding ways to improve still. Why support a movement that disrespects Winston Churchill, the poor bloke must be spinning in his grave. He saved us from being taken over by one of the worst and most powerful racists ever to live enabling the multicultural Britain we have and love today, remind yourselves of that NT. Sorry he wasn’t politically correct for 2021 in his pre millennial era. I shall not return to NT unless the current management leave, our heritage is respected and existing customers come first. Most of us working class have plenty of ancestors who have also suffered in the past here, children in coal mines and up chimneys. Workhouses (slavery that many of us poor whites suffered here) where the British government shoved whole families of ours that were destitute to work literally to death in appalling conditions. I won’t be made to feel guilty by a few privileged management members trying to justify their current wealth and status so they can keep it without feeling guilty in the current climate. By the way, lovely that when We cancelled we had to settle the whole year bill even though we haven’t been able to step foot on NT land all this year and most of last year, fab, icing on the cake NT.

Abjectly Poor Customer Service and Questionable Business Practice
After approaching ten years of membership we are compelled to cancel our membership due to customer service and general business prctices that would shame a Victorian Slum Landlord. Cannon Rawnsley will doubtless be spinning in his grave.
