Have cancelled our membership and will be spending my money with English Heritage...
Have they lost the plot..can they really afford to loose memberships at the rate they appear to by allowing Tim Parker to foist his left wing political/woke opinions culminating in an 115 page report on how we must view history in relation to their properties ( how much did that cost to produce???).. I don't need the National Trust telling me what to think. The job of the National Trust is to look after its buildings - nothing else. It’s not the job of the National Trust to lecture it’s members and volunteers with their woke views of British history. Have cancelled our membership and will be spending my money with English Heritage... To quote Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.." big mistake, Huge" #prowngoal
Cancelling membership
My partner and I echo many of the comments on this site. We wrote to NT saying we were cancelling our joint membership as we expected that our subscriptions would be spent on maintaining land and buildings for the enjoyment of current and future generations not in producing expensive 115 page reports. Several people I know have been made redundant by NT and these were people earning minimum wage. These are people clearing paths and maintaining land and buildings. We don't care whether the report was woke-ist or Trump-ist. We do not want our money spent on political reports to suit somebody's agenda. We understand our history good and bad. We emailed NT to tell them we were cancelling our monthly DD and they wrote back to say "I’m afraid though, we can't cancel your membership mid-term. That's partly because of the way we use the income from Direct Debits and partly because of HMRC rules. When you join with a monthly Direct Debit you make an arrangement to split your payments across a 12 month period to pay for the full year, and we can then set our budgets knowing that our charitable income is secure for the year. It helps us plan our conservation work and maintain the special places we care for." Well stuff them. Lets see what they do.
Why!
Told me I wouldn't be able to cancel my membership? Why.. I should be able to pause it or cancel. We are in a national lockdown! All but essential travel. Going to national trust sites ISNT essential! Please review this. I need this pausing or resolving ASAP!
They won't let you cancel your membership!
I finally decided to cancel my National Trust membership after more than 25 years because of their offensive new political attitude and "woke" virtue signalling. I prefer my money spent on the work they are supposed to do. Easier said than done though. Nowhere on the website to let you cancel; no guidance on how you can do it. After an hour of going around in circles on the website, I emailed their enquiries email address and gave my membership number, my full name and a clear request to cancel my direct debit. The response? An email from "Adam" asking me to provide my full name and membership number (err...they were in my email) so that he could "look into my enquiry". I despair.
Emailed the Trust no response
Emailed the Trust, but Two weeks later no responses. As where possible I prefer to avoid leaving negative feedback and give an organisation the chance to respond... Since the Covid Lockdown, the booking system to actually get into anything is absolutely diabolical. Not only is it the most time consuming and difficult experience in the world, you must search each house individually, by each day, and there is never any availability either. Two weeks ago was half term in the West Midlands, tickets went on sale on Friday which is when most people are working. On Monday morning my friends and I tried to book tickets, previously we haven't been able to gain access to anything since lockdown restrictions were lifted. On most school holidays historically, we would always get together to visit a National Trust property together. Eventually, one of us found a slot late on the Friday at a house one and half hours’ drive from Warwickshire. No other slots available during the week, or at nearer house, despite approximately 10 houses being closer. We turned up at the house, were informed that the cafe, house, shop plus everything was due to shortly close. Very disappointed to note that despite it being half term, it was pretty empty, it appears an entire over reaction to the possible dangers of covid in what is an outside space essentially (as we couldn't get in the house anyway) and we only saw three other families. It's fair to say the average age of an attendees was over 70 plus, without any grandchildren in tow. We all work full time, we are limited to school holidays, and, yet there was no encouragement on the website or at the entrance for those with more flexibility to consider booking/visiting outside of peak school holidays. Or even restrictions locked into the website to prioritise family tickets and minimise the purchasing of adult tickets. When I spoke to their staff, they mentioned that at off peak times customers can now turn up but are not guaranteed entry to house. It's not fair on families, or adults that are restricted to school holidays (such as teachers) this year I haven't had the opportunity to book any of their houses or gardens due to the issues mentioned above. The gardens at Hidcote were stunning and we really enjoyed the visit albeit it was getting a little dark. However, I would urge to them to urgently reconsider their booking processes as Eventbrite is simply not suitable for these purposes and at the very least encourage members to consider booking outside of peak school holidays, if they can. Also as a goodwill to members they should extend membership beyond lockdown. I appreciate they may not be able to afford to refund but to extend the membership does not sound unreasonable considering all the billions they have in stocks and shares. My parents very kindly gift us a National Trust membership every year for Christmas, if things continue like this, I will be asking them to cancel our family membership as it is a total waste of time and money.
Claim Back Dated Payment Holiday!
Claimed back-dated Payment Holiday after NT online broadcast yesterday. NT had informed Members by email but only had my postal address. They have no difficulty in contacting me by post with membership card and marketing but failed to do so about payment holiday!?! Trust neither current Trustees nor "Bored" of Directors with my and Nation's heritage! Lack of responsible stewardship, judgement and leadership in such a crucially important British organisation. Would have given no stars but requires a minimum of one to be posted!
Won’t be joining again
Won’t be joining again , mixing politics with history isn’t a good idea
The National Woke Trust
The National Trust, a once great organisation now subject to the woke views of Tim Parker etc. Used to volunteer for them in Devon, never again as they do not deserve my time. Forget the politics, history is what it s, no one is hiding from it so stop trying to ratchet up the guilt of your members. Any organisation is only as good as those setting the example at the top. Get some people in who actually reflect the views of your members.
The job of the National Trust is to…
The job of the National Trust is to look after its buildings - nothing else. It’s not the job of the National Trust to lecture it’s members and volunteers with their woke views of British history. We have cancelled our membership and will not be volunteering again either.
The Fall of the National Trust !
As a long term member visiting Stourhead yesterday, hugely frustrated to find car park closed ! aperently I shoild have booked my place ! I have never received any notification from the Trust to say everyone has to book a car park place ! I can understand restrictions to the cafe, buildings etc but the car park ! This is the last straw, the National Trust needs to replace its new management team and return to the values and beliefs it started with !
